About 15 miles of the Dordogne (Dordogne Quercynoise) runs through the northwest edge of the Midi-Pyrenees (beytween Briars and Souillac). A few miles above Souillac is the chateau of Belcastel situated above a charming turn in the river sitting on a spur of rock. The river from here down to Eyzies-de-Tayac and the Vezere entry to the river are a paddlers' paradise.Near Belcastel, the little river Alzou enters the Dordogne (with a narrow bridge crossing it). There is a fine article with details on canoeing in this region by a Middlebury Vt. professor in the N.Y. Times of 4/05/09 (get it from Google under dordogne+canoe). They took a train from Paris to Brive-le-Gaillarde and rented a car there. Apparently there are many outfitters in the area that rent canoes and kayaks and offer pick-up services.
The little river Alzou which runs past Rocamadour enters the Dordogne near the chateau. Worth a stop for the views
