This neighborhood was built in 1946 for members of the Jewish Haredi (orthodox) movement of Poalay Agudat Yisrael (PAGY).
Between 1948 and 1967 the city of Jerusalem was divided between Israel and Jordan, and the border ("The Municipal Line") lay right next to the Paggy houses. Living there was not easy and sometimes dangerous. Slits for rifle shooting were built in the fortified stone walls on the roofs (see photo). Many of the original residents left, and new immigrants settlewd in their place.
Since the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967 the border dividing the city is no longer there, and residents of the Pagy neighborhood can lead normal lives.
Directions: South of the Eshkol Boulevard, near Rubens Park
