  • Citadel Cathedral, Gozo Island - Malta

Citadel Cathedral (also known as Gozo Cathedral) is located above a flight of steps (as depicted in our photographs on the right) just inside the main entrance to the Citadel in the city of Victoria or Rabat. It is a baroque style cathedral built in the late 17th century on a site of an old church dedicated to Juno which was destroyed in a powerful earthquake in 1693.

Citadel Cathedral dedicated to Assumption of Our Lady or Assumption of Virgin Mary was designed by famous Maltese Lorenzo Gafa who also designed the famous cathedral in Mdina on the main island of Malta. Two statues located on the entrance to the Cathedral are those of Pope John Paul II and Pope Pius IX. The Cathedral is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Citadel.
