Lazareti, Dubrovnik: 2 reviews and 4 photos

Leaving the Old Town through Ploce Gate you will enter the more modern suburb of Ploce. The area is mainly orientated towards a residential and business function but the area does have certain historical significance. Up to the beginning of the 20th century this area was the site of a large open air market where cattle and other livestock was bought and sold. Traders came from far and wide to wheel and deal at the market and this lead to a fear and threat of disease being carried into the city of Dubrovnik...hence the market?s location well outside the walls. To protect the city against disease, a long series of stone buildings were built along the shore north-east of the port, where visitors to the city were often quarantined before they could enter the city proper...if at all. It was normal for visitors to be held in quarantine here for forty days or more!
Today the buildings are a popular live music and entertainment venue.
