Fort St. John, Dubrovnik: 5 reviews and 6 photos
Also known as Fort St. Ivan, Fort St. John is the bulky fortress which protects the main harbour of Dubrovnik. The fort is built on quay which curves around the harbour from the west like a protective arm. The massive fortress was built in stages between the 1346 and 1557. Its present appearance is due to major extensions carried out during the 16th century and its strength and size served its function well. At night a huge heavy chain was stretched from Fort St. John all the way across the mouth of the harbour, via Lokrum Island, to restrict access in the hours of darkness.
Today the Fort houses a variety of museums, including an Aquarium and Dubrovnik’s Maritime Museum, which has displays covering the Ragusan Republic’s maritime prowess, Dubrovnik’s role during WWII and navigation techniques and instruments.
