Banana Leaf: "When in China -- go for Thai" Banana Leaf - Xindongan Plaza - CLOSED Tip by oerkenbo
Banana Leaf - Xindongan Plaza - CLOSED, Beijing: 1 reviews and 3 photos
Apparently Banana Leaf is a rather successful chain of Thai restaurants in China. We actually stumbled upon both this one in Beijing as well as the one in Suzhou.
Why Thai food in China? Well, surprisingly most of the restaurants in Beijing were really not memorable, to say the least. We went primarily because we wanted a good meal (and hadn't for a new evenings), as well as for a change in scenery. This chain was quite serviceable.
The food is the typical Thai fare -- satay, curry, etc. I was delighted that they didn't water it down too much.
One thing you'll definitely run into in restaurants in China is "Sorry we've run out of...". This happens a lot. I thought the Banana Leaf really upped the game when they said "Sorry we've run out of rice..." In China?
Service was pretty good -- even took it upon themselves to enforce the no-smoking rule, which is very laudable in a country choking on 2nd hand smoke.
Favorite Dish: Grilled pork neck -- you must try it as it's not available in many Thai restos. This is the Thai version of the Chinese "char shiu" -- only 10 times better. The meat is absolutely tender and succulent.
Address: 306-307 3/F Xindongan Plaza, Wangfujing Street
Price Comparison: more expensive than average
Directions: The building is right on the Wangfujing pedestrian street, not far from the Goldfish Hutong (or Jingyu Hutong). It's inside a big mall otherwise known as APM and there're also a lot of other eateries in there as well.
Theme: Pan-Asian and Pacific Rim
