The walls of the territory circle what is now the inner city area and were erected by the Moors during the occupation. When the Spanish arrived, they further strengthened the walls following damage by many battles. The British also had an input when they arrived and added to the walls you see today. You can take a walk, starting at the old city gates. The North Bastion is also known as San Pablo Battery. The Southport Gates were part of the fortification and were built in the 1500?s and were built by the Spanish.
