Favorite thing: This entire town is beautiful; it is a pleasure just to relax and take in the view. This is very fortunate, as we were completely unable to obtain information about what to see and do when we were there. Based on information available on the internet, we devoted an entire weekend to exploring this gorgeous town. We left with plenty of money in our pockets- even with a trip to the visitor center, we could not obtain information in English! The lady working there spoke English, but was completely overwhelmed as she was the only one on duty and there were about 5 or 6 people waiting for assistance. She did not wish to take time with us and had no written references to share. So, we did not know where we could go or what to do. We wish we had printed the online info, but did not anticipate the need to do that. We spent our time with leisurely walks, enjoying the atmosphere and taking photographs, though we did not know what we were getting photos of! I would have liked to take a tour that included the history of the place, but the lady told us there was no tour. It was June, so this was during the tourist season and I thought I had seen something about tours online, but perhaps they are only offered on certain days!?! There was no way to know. The entire town looked deserted; we did not have the opportunity to approach locals and see if we could strike up conversation. This is also the only location where we missed church services on Sunday, because we could not find out what was available.

We advise travelers to bring their own information, in their own language, if they decide to visit this incredibly beautiful town. We have traveled to 8 countries thus far, and usually find information readily available. In this instance, I repeat: bring your own!!! Another user on this site was able to get a walking tour map, but we could not, so that may be hit-or-miss.

We were able to shop in a few places. This is best done leisurely, as well. My family voted Monschau as the most slow paced for shopkeepers we have ever experienced. We still laugh in amazement at that, and secretly wish we could work as slowly; perhaps our health would benefit! We also saved a lot of money because of the pace; since each transaction was slow, we had relatively few of them and were still traveling 'light' when we left town. I had hoped to buy up a lot of souvenirs for an upcoming family reunion, but would have needed a week- hee hee!

All in all, it was a good time- go prepared to relax, slow down, just see what you see without needing to know or understand anything. Monschau will not disappoint! Or, if you are like me and NEED to know stuff, come prepared. There is plenty to explore if, if you can find it!

Fondest memory: Exploring the old castle was fun. It was wide open- just walk on in. We were still a little nervous, not sure if we were allowed to be there, but now we see online that yes, it is fine to check it out. Photography is fun in this town; it can really keep you busy!
