"Boljoon, Cebu church and other victims of greed" Cebu Island Off The Beaten Path Tip by unica_hija77

Cebu Island Off The Beaten Path: 7 reviews and 8 photos

Boljoon church in Southern Cebu, about a hundred km. from Cebu City. is a real trip to 200 years ago. Visit it while the people in charge have not totally wrecked it as they did other historical landmarks. As in many other churches in the Philippines, the parish priests have sold antiquities like its chandeliers, wrought silver communion rail. and other accessories. Termites are almost finished with its shockingly neglected statue cases.

Its church bells, old catechism school and prisoner detention cell stir the genetic memory cells and tell of life in our greatgreatgreatgrandparents' time.

It seems Catholic seminaries do not have church architecture or religious art appreciation in their curricula because after renovation most churches look like they have a cow's head and horse's tail attached to a dog's body. Filipino churchmen have not fully awakened to the tourist income possibilities of historical buildings. Also, churches have not been spared from the Filipino proclivity for initiating pointless projects just to raise funds and pocket a good part of the money.

What's left of Boljoon church's artifacts are in its small museum, which gives a tantalizing glimpse of what were sold to antique shops/collectors.
