The Mulu Caves Project website has a really nice writeup on Deer Cave, which is the largest single cave passage yet discovered on earth. A huge pile of boulders obscures the true width of the main, southern entrance (the one the bats use), which is in a limestone cliff and is over 170 meters wide. The arch of the entrance rises to 122 meters. Nowhere in the cave, which is 2030 meters in length, is the roof less than 90 meters high! Although you cannot see them inside the cave, it is the home of over one million bats (some estimates say 4 million) of 12 different species. The main chamber is the area where deer used to come to lick salt from the bat guano, so the local Penan and Berawan people named the cave Gua Payau or Gua Rusa (Deer Cave). A concrete path leads into the cave at the "human entrance" and winds its way around, following the natural contours of the cave floor. See also a videoclip.

Directions: ~3 km east of Park headquarters
