As you approach Karak from the east along the King's Highway the castle, perched on top of a high hill, suddenly comes into view. Even though it's now surrounded by a modern town, the castle still dominates the skyline and the town.

Karak Castle was built in the 12th century during the Crusades, though the hill on which it lies has a much longer history, being first mentioned in the Old Testament. By the end of the 12th century the castle had fallen to the Muslim leader Saladin after fierce fighting. It was strengthened and fortified over the centuries though much of it lies in ruin today.

It costs only 1JD to enter the castle and the best place to start exploring is the museum, which gives a good overview of the history of the region and the castle. Though much of it is now in ruins, the castle was built on seven levels and there remains many rooms and passages to explore - for some of them you will need a torch. There is also a good view over town on one side and down to the Dead Sea on the other.0

Karak is a convenient place to break the long trip on the King's Highway, but the only real sight in the town is the castle and there's not too much here in the way of tourist facilities. We stayed in Hotel Mujeb, a good value hotel 4km east of the town on a junction on the King's Highway.
