Wupatki National Monument has hundreds of ancient ruins that you can enter and explore. It is nice to actually go inside of them instead of looking at them from a distance. This is one of the ones I thought was most impressive.
800 years or so ago the volcanic ash from Sunset Crater volcano caused this desert area to become very fertile. Pueblo farmers built a civilization here for a time and there are hundreds of stone ruins scattered through the area. When the soil fertility was used up the people moved on and left these impressive stone buildings behind. There is a museum close to the largest of the Wapatki ruins and you can drive to it easily. To see other ruins may require a bit of hiking. (Stay on the trails. Don't climb on walls. Take some water with you. Have fun!)

Directions: Wupatki is near highway 89 North of Flagstaff about 30 miles. We went to Sunset Crater first and then went in to Wupatki from the South East access road.
othercontact: One of the ruins was so large it
