Today to the town Grein, a bicycle ride of about 66 km. In connection with moderate weather not via St.Florian and Enns. So via the beautiful main square and over the Nibelingenbrücke to the northern bank which will be followed today. Through the city park and the Pleschinger Au to the Danube dijk. On the other hand, the chemistry works of Voest. In other words the first part along the Danube to Abwinden was not very interesting. In Abwinden we drink a cappuccino and then a nice route through Langeheim to Mauthausen. A town with a nice promonade foresee with colorful medieval houses. However, with a black history from the second world war, a concentration camp. The camp was one of the first massive concentration camp complexes in Nazi Germany, and were the last ones to be liberated by the Western Allies or the Soviet Union. We have not visited, we were only passing. In the past we have seen enough, Dachau (D), Flossenburg (D), Kamp Westerbork (NL) and Terezin (CZ). The only thing wat I can say is "don't forget it's only sixty years ago". Especially in a time when a man named Joseph Ratzinger Alios, with a war past, Pope Benedict XVI may be. A pope who restored a priest who denies the Holocaust. Have also a look at It seems Impossible. Over the Danube Dijk (Mittenhafen) with a strong tail wind toward the dam Wallsee-Mittenkirchen. In the nice place Mittenkirchen time for a lunch. Then further along a prehistoric open-air museum and through a nice wooded area back to the Danube near Dornach. From Dornach, was the flat land (Strudengau) what hilly. In the course of the afternoon we arrived in the lovely town of Grein, also known as the gateway to the Strudengau. An interesting town with a medieval center. A beautiful end of a nice cycling day.
For a visual impression of this day see my home made video Linz-Grein.
