Walnut Canyon National Monument is another site where the ancient people of this area lived nearly 800 years ago. It was quite a change to see these cliff dwellings after seeing the desert style pueblos of Wupatki.
Walnut Canyon is about 400 feet deep. 185 feet below the rim is a ledge with an under cut shelf. It forms a long narrow cave perfect for building cliff dwellings. Inside the dwellings you could see the back walls of the caves still blackened by smoke from fires that were lit nearly a millenium ago. The fronts of the cave were walled off and in some places the walls had fallen down but in others they had not.

Directions: Walnut Canyon is about 10 miles East of Flagstaff near highway I-40.
