Favorite thing: Maastricht is known for its rich social life. Clubs are here so many, and social life mainly takes place in the clubs. It?s the pool-club, the citzin solierie, the carnival clubs. Its traditional. Of course people are also active in the clubs such as swimming, soccer, tennis, but clubs promoting Maastricht culture: the Mestreechter Staar ? a choir- the Struys committee ? a carnival club ? are more interesting. The hobbyclubs for the rich, like the rotary or the ronde tafel, are also very active. So, people of Maastricht love to be social, meeting eachother, drinking, that is an aspect of the culture here. Clublife and politics often mingle. As a matter of fact, a politician is a member of several clubs and maybe he is a club hero who gets his votes from the several clubs. Who knows. A famous local person in that perspective was Jan Hoen, a CDA politician, who was a member of so many clubs and got into local governemnet. When politics are done ther is no line between polics and spare time: the debate continues in the pub of the club, where club members try to get to know the latest developments of what happened in city-administration. A famous Maastricht citzin, socialist, who was like that was Ralph Leenders. Open to his supporters, always open to inform his voters about the newest devellopmetsn in the town-coucel meeting. Under a cool glass of beer. The line between the average people in Maastricht and the hight art of politics is fading. That is why Maatrsicht is relaxed in its way how to deal with polics. Alas, there are exceptions, when the ultimate club is on the table ? MVV? the its heating debate, nearly fighting in the streets or I case it comes to the ? anti-social? club of maranuana producers in a certain campers park called ? Vinkenslag? . but what is clublife? For some reason many graduates from university leave Maastricht, because they see more chance in places such as Amsterdam. The citizin solderie or the lions club ( the latter being voluntaity club for good goals) doesn?t seem to appeal, because of the fact thatit would not offer social life as one has in mind.this s a serious problem and a challenge for Maastricht. Academics are leaving. How to keep them in Maastricht? Luckily, if one takes time, on ecan find out that club life is not restricted to what one would call ? gemutlichkeit verbindungen? . it is for academics interesting to do voluntairy work, in such organisations with a global caracter. That makes it interesting. Maastrict has for example Amnesty International. The red Cross, Novib and of course polical parties. Combining being usefull with the typical Maastrcih local coziness is then logical. A ground for academical people to stay in Maastricht. Maastricht is wonderful for self-realization. In a surrounding being so ancient, full of traditions and a breath of bourgondian style there is enough to explore as it comes to social life.
