This part of the United States was wild and dangerous in the late 1800s. Near Lordsburg there was a famous incident when Judge H. C. McComas and his wife were killed and their 6 year-old son was taken captive by a band of the Chiricahua Apache. This led to a number of attempts by the US Army to locate and rescue the son, and added to the animosity late in the wars with the Apache.

Directions: The area and the historic plaque are along New Mexico Highway 90.
