"Summer Palace" China Things to Do Tip by graeme83

China Things to Do: 765 reviews and 1,190 photos

The Palace was the place where the emperors of the Qing Dynasty spent their summers away from the Forbidden City. The Summer Palace was an amazing experience. It took about an hour to get to from Central Beijing by bus. I entered through the East Palace Gate and began to walk around the Kunming Lake. It is quite a long walk so (as the lake was frozen) I walked right across the lake to the West Causeway after about a kilometre.

After getting across the lake I had a wander about the dock area and then proceeded to walk to the top of Longevity Hill. On this hill is a beautiful Temple. On coming back down to the lake area I walked along the Long Corridor with its ornate paintings before entering the Garden of Virtue and Harmony. Inside here is an open-air theatre that continuously plays an opera show during the day. I spent about 30 minutes here being the only person watching the show, which seemed a bit of a waste - especially when i left!

I would love to come back to the palace in the summer to see another side of this remarkable palace.

Directions: Bus 826 from Tianamen Square
