located in plaza ferdinand VII on palafox street is the william chipley memorial. william dudley chipley (1840-1897) was a confederate lieutenant colonel during the civil war. after the civil war he became a railroad tycoon and brought the first railroad to pensacola. chipley was mayor of pensacola in 1887 and a member of the florida legislature in 1895 until his death in 1897. the north florida town of chipley is named after this famous florida statesman.
