Tunisia Things to Do: 757 reviews and 1,154 photos

Apart from Carthage, which caters to bus loads of foreign tourists, the ruins at Dougga, about 80 km west of Tunis, are spectacular. The site is very well preserved, and although most Tunisians will tell you not to go during the summer, because of the heat, a hat and a bottle of water should ensure your survival.
Dougga is in the Tunisian heartland. The area around the site is dotted with farms, and the terrain is hilly. When you get there you can hire a gov't guide for about FF 100 who will give you a great guided tour. The day we were there, there were no other visiters...and the experience was magic. There a beautiful amphitheatre, temple, and the Roman village is quite well preserved, along with some very original signs indicating the location of the ancient 'lupanar' (break out your Latin dictionairies!)
