  Gafsa (and Jugurtha)
by Elisabcn

Gafsa was a nice surprise to me as I thought that it was a sleeping city in the west without any interest, just a place to stop to sleep during our Wild West tour (it has a lot of hotels of different prices). An important city in Roman times, who in 107 BCE destroyed it during their campaign against Jugurtha (but later rebuilt it!), Gafsa is the main city of the region and the center of the phosphate industry in the country (a man told us that we could visit some phosphate mines but we did not have the time to verify it!). Busy, sunny, a smiling city without many tourists, it?s known for its Roman pools (the only example in the country) which deserve a short visit. The traditional quarter that surrounds the pools is also very nice with some interesting details. As we visited the city in winter, we had a completely image (and pictures) of the square (empty, without children taking a bath) but we were able to explore better the pools, their mosaics and the tunnel that connect them. Other spots that deserve some pictures are the Kasbah and the old Jewish Baths, used nowadays as a public lavatory. Ah! Here Hannibal has nothing to do . . . here king Jughurta is the star!!!
