  • Citadel of Saleh El Din - Cairo

Cairo's City Fortress, housing a number of Mosques & Museums (chiefly Military Museum - no cameras allowed in here... lockers at entrance).

Built to fortify the City in 1183.

The really is a must see in my opinion. Spellbinding city view from up here too.

As at March 2009: 50LE Adult entrance fee for entire site & Museums.

You can enter the mosques at certain times of day. Remember off with the shoes, and women to cover up.... well you would be anyway I hope in Cairo, but must even cover your hair with a scarf for the mosque.

There is the Citadel Cafe on site for refreshments (overpriced as would be expected, but OK for a fizzy drink and they do a good kebab).

Address: Muqattam hill, just outside Cairo Centre
Directions: Off Salah Salem St.
Phone: +20 2 25121735
