Only, it's not really an HOURglass, it's a YEARglass.

This was made to celebrate Hungary joining the European Union and I think one of the reasons I like it so much is that it's so unique. Travelling around, I've seen my share of public works of art to celebrate or commemorate this and that and the other thing but, I've never seen anything like this before.

Basically, it looks like a giant hockey puck on its side - only prettier. First of all, it's huge - at least 10 feet tall, probably taller, made of a lovely reddish marble. The glass parts are surrounded by the marble and it rests on a cement cradle. Across from it are a series of cement posts of varying heights. Every year, when it's time to turn it over, ropes are fitted around the marble and then threaded through the posts across from it and used as a pulley system to roll it around to the now-empty glass compartment.

And the best parts - it's free and right by several other things to see so you don't have to go out of your way to check it out.

Address: Varosliget (city park)
Directions: It's located on the edge of the park that faces out onto Dozsa Gyorgy ut. just south of Heroes Square.
