Favorite thing: The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is a must see.
It is located 30 minutes drive from the bustling town of Sandakan. What a difference a few miles makes.
Orangutans come into Sepilok, not only from captivity, but more than likely from their homes in the forest that are being cleared for Palm plantations. This area is being planted in trees that produce palm oil.
Sepilok serves to give these unfortunate animals a home in the forest rather than in a cage.

Orangutans prefer fruit as their main source of food. That is why they are fed bananas and other fruit when they come to the feeding platform for breakfast.
Some days several arrive and some days not so many.
It is fun to watch them coming out of the forest, one by one. Some have babies in tow.

Fondest memory: The Center is open Sunday to Thursday and Saturday from 9 am - 12:00 pm and from 2 pm - 4:00 pm. Friday from 9 am - 11:00 am and 2 pm to 4:00 pm. The feeding times are 10 am and 3 pm. It is important to arrive early to get a good spot to view the feeding.

The center is located 23 km from Sandakan. There are daily flights from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan. Most hotels provide pick-up at the airport.
