Many of the cities on the cruiseships' inside passage route are so similar. Each will have the "famous" eatery in town and even the stores will be exactly the same from port to port with only the city name on the t-shrits and magnets being different.

I did, however, like downtown Ketchikan a little more than the other places. Free wanderings around town include a visit to Eagle Park (get up close and personal with magnificent birds of prey), Whale Park - a small park with pretty flowers and a few totem poles, and Creek Street - a row of brightly colored wooden houses/buildings perched over the water on pilings. There are more totem poles at the start of Creek Street. You can also watch people fishing at the bridge near the Yacht club. And if you're there in salmon season be sure to see the fish ladder up Ketchikan Creek.

As for shopping, you'll have plenty of choices but it's not necesarry to go into every souvenir shop - prices and merchandise are all about the same. Do try and buy something authentic Alaskan. Check the labels and/or visit a gallery/local handicrafts store.
