The Periyar National Park (sometimes named Thekkady National Park) is located at the eastern border of Kerala, roughly 120 km from Kochi (4 hour driving distance). The center of the reserve is a sweetwater dam, the Periyar Lake. The National Park is home to most of the major Indian wildlife species, such as tigers, elephants, sambar and axis deer, Indian bison, wild boars, langur monkeys, giant squirrels, fish otters and many bird species. Tourists have several options to explore the park: There are (crowded) tourist boat rides on the lake, if you`re lucky, you can see animals coming to the shore for drinking (in the far distance). You have a better chance to see animals on the early morning or late afternoon boat ride. Alternatively you can participate in a guided nature walk within the park (half-day-tour), or join the bamboo rafting excursion (full day trip, boating & hiking on the lake). Both activities are highly recommended and give you a chance to see the park without the tourist hordes you are likely to encounter on the boat trip.
