by MichaelFalk1969

The Backwaters are a network of lakes, lagoons and rivers lying parallel to the sea cost of the state of Kerala in South India. The center of the Backwaters area would extend roughly between Cochi in the north and Allepey in the south of Kerala. As the waterways form an interconnected labyrinth, travelling by boat is the usual form of transport, not only for tourists who enjoy a cruise on the luxurious houseboats. The scenery here is most beautiful, a lush abundant green background of palm trees, coconut trees, water hyacinths and rice paddies. The Backwaters are a great place for bird watching - Brahmin Kites, Kingfishers, Terns, Cormorants and Egrets are very common. A great place to relax and explore.

I recommend to stay in one of the many hospitable heritage homestays that offer accomodation here (see my hotel-tip section for that). I also recommend not only to do a house-boat trip, but do a tour of the smaller canals with a motorboat, too: you can cover a wider area and the motorboats - unlike the houseboats - can traverse the smaller, more interesting canals due to their smaller size. It is truly fascinating to view rural life from the boat, fishermen throwing their nets, ferry boats crossing the rivers, women washing clothing, children swimming, ...
