This is by far my favorite church in Belgium. It's beautiful inside and out and has a lot to offer besides the usual church architecture.

One of those things is an original Michaelangelo sculpture of Mary and the baby Jesus. You don't see a lot of his work outside of Italy & France and this is a very sweet piece.

The most interesting thing, by far, though, is the excavated grave paintings from the 12th and 13th centuries. They were discovered in 1979 when some graves were being moved. Most of the paintings have a religious theme but there are a lot of flowers, stars, birds, and other ornamental designs as well. The most amazing part is they believe they were painted free hand.

Address: Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerkhof-Zuid, 8000 Brugge
Directions: Take Wollestraat east out of the Grote Markt, then turn right onto Dijver. When you get to the corner of Dijver and Mariastraat you'll see it.
