Lower Castle, Vilnius: 9 reviews and 12 photos

The Lower Castle sits at the bottom of Gediminas Hill but is know more popularly known as the Royal Palace since the buildings restoration. Parts of the building date as far back as the 13th century and has since been the seat of the Lithuanian Dukes sice Duke Gediminas rebuilt the original castle.
During the 16th century, the palace was restored and renovated in the Renaissance style, with a heavy Italian architectural influence.
It was during the 17th century that the palace suffered severe damage at the hands of the Russians and later in the 19th century, the palace was totally levelled, again by the Russians. Restoration of the palace only began in earnest in 2002 and restoration is ongoing but almost complete, and should open its doors to visitors in time for the 2009 celebrations for Vilnius' reign as European Capital of Culture.
