Fastnacht has its pastry specialties, mostly baked in schmalz or butter and very greasy.
Since during the Lent eating all products from warm-blooded animals was forbidden, all these had to be consumed before the beginning of the Lent. So people not only feasted on meat but also invented pastries that contain a lot of eggs and are baked swimming in butter or schmalz.
A specialty from Baden is named Scherben ("broken pottery") because that's what it looks and feels like. Diamond-shaped pieces of dough are baked and then covered in powdering sugar. The result is quite hard and crunchy. Better eat them outdoors because the powdered sugar will be everywhere...
