Near the corner of Spring and Front Streets is the venerable downtown YMCA. Columbus began very early, in 1855, with a strong YMCA presence, and this fine brick building, which opened in 1924, was at one time the largest YMCA in the world. It has enough space to not only shelter visitors and provide recreational facilities of all types, but also provided space for the founding of Franklin University and Capitol Law School. I entered and climbed the stairs to a second floor where there was a very well kept reading room with nicely varnish wood paneling and overstuffed furniture. Through beveled glass doors, I could see an aerobics class in session. Traditionally, young men came from the countryside to find temporary quarters here as they adjusted to work in the city. Today, an adjacent part of the building provides shelter for students and others traveling through.
