"Chiesa della SS Annunziata" Basilica Della Santissima Annunziata Tip by Tijavi
Basilica Della Santissima Annunziata, Florence: 4 reviews and 19 photos
Hardly any tourists here, this could be one of Florence's unsung churches - shame, I barely had 10 minutes to enjoy it before it closed for the noontime siesta.
The church, built and rebuilt in 1250 and 1481, respectively, is unique in that there is a large atrium before the main interiors. The former is decorated with bright beautiful frescoes by Mannerist artists such as Rosso Fiorentino, Andrea del Sarto and Jacopo Pontormo.
Inside, the heavily-frescoed ceiling by Pietro Gambelli is a sight to behold (you need a good camera to capture it in the dark, though), while the miraculous 13th century painting of the Virgin continues to attract devotees to this day, mainly by newly-wed couples praying for a happy and fruitful (in terms if offspring, of course) marriage.
Address: Piazza Santissima Annunziata
