Opposite the Bishop's Castle is the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, an 11th Century triple-aisled Romanesque building, which was rebuilt the first time after having been destroyed by the Mongols around the 13th-15th Century. During the Turkish occupation in 1594 - 1598 it was used for gun-emplacements, ammunition store and stables. Italian architects rebuilt the church again between 1639 and 1645. The latest restoration work was in the 1970s.
