Tours of three major homes of the influential people that founded the town are great sites to visit. They are part of the Parks Service administration. Two are located right in the middle of town. Barrington Hall from 1842 when Barrington King and dad built the home and town. They had a large cotton plantation here, then the mill was a large factor in the wealth for them. The family preserved the home and seven acres of garden in rear 160 years ago. It is nicely furnished.
Bulloch Hall from 1839 circa construction has ties to Mittie, mother of Teddie Roosevelt. She was daughter of famous Revolutionary war general, James Bulloch. The home tour depicts life and slavery in the old times, and has a garden.
Smith plantation is from 1845, and Archibald Smith was partner with Roswell King in the cotton trade and mill to process. This was a 300 acre plantation in the good old days. It is just outside of town a couple of miles.
