Approached by 42 steps. this gateway is the highest gateway in the world and an astounding example of the Mughal architecture. It is built of red sandstone and inlaid with white marble. A panel on the gate has an inscription- "Jesus, Son of Mary (on whom be peace) said: The world is a bridge, pass over it, but build no houses upon it. He who hopes for a day, may hope for eternity; but the world endures but an hour. Spend it in prayer, for the rest is unseen."
This awesome structure towers above the courtyard of the mosque. Semi octagonal, it is crowned by pillars and chhatris. The design has simple ornamentation, carved verses from the Koran and towering arches. Thirteen smaller domed perch upon on the roof, along with small turrets and inlays of white and black marble. A long flight of steps leads down the hill giving the gateway additional height. A Persian inscription on the eastern archway records the conquest of the Deccan by Akbar in 1601.
