Favorite thing: Harberton is the oldest farm / estancia in Fireland / Tierra del Fuego, and it was built in 1886 on a narrow peninsula overlooking the Beagle Channel. The missionary Thomas Bridges got this piece of land by the Argentine governement for his work among the local indians and for his help in rescuing the victims of the numerous shipwrecks in the closeby Beagle-channel.
The name Harberton was choosen because Bridges' wife Mary was born in the Devonshire village with the same name. The farmhouse - that houses the restaurant and cafe nowadays - was prefabricated in England by Mary's father, a carpenter. Thomas Bridges first wanted to assemble the house at another spot, with a better panorama-view, but the local Yamana Indians adviced him to take that spot next to the ship-landingstage as beeing the most sheltered.

Fondest memory: Thomas Bridges is buried in the small cemetery of Harberton, at almost the same place that he wanted first to choose for his house - it would have had the view as on my main photo !
