The Manila Cathedral is known as Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Manila during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines and today, it remains the ecclesisastical seat of the Archdiocese of Manila.
From the time the first church was built in 1581 made of indigenous materials (nipa and bamboos), it had sufferred structural damages wrought by natural calamities like typhoons and earthquakes throughout the ensuing centuries. A number of reconstructions were made, and a magnificent cathedral built from 1870 to 1879 had as unique feature, the center cross of the dome which is a reference point of astronomical longitudes of the archipelago. Unfortunately, this magnificent architectural masterpiece was also toppled into ruins by the bombs of World War II in 1945. The Cathedral was reconstructed years after, from 1954 to 1958 with the support of the people.
The cathedral is said to be the resting place for former prelates who served the Archdiocese of Manila, interred in the cathedral crypts like that of St. Peter?s Basilica in the Vatican City.
