Au Palet d'Or: "For The Perfect Welcome!" Quebec Restaurant Tip by johngayton

This is something that Canadians do exceptionally well - the small-scale artisanal patisserie/boulangerie, and especially so (as should be expected) here in French Canada. "Au Palet d'Or" is a perfect example of the genre with its half-a-dozen tables crowded between the window, overlooking the old town corner of Rue Garneau, and the colourful glass-fronted displays of delicous-looking pastries.
Dropping in on-spec for breakfast, the smell of fresh-baked bread mingling with the brewing coffee was just the welcome required on a minus 25 Centigrade January morning.
Despite its central location in the heart of the old town (just down the hill from the Hotel de Ville) this little place manages to avoid being overtly touristy, even though most of its trade is indeed from visitors. Prices are reasonable, service is "Quebec Bonjour" friendly and, certainly on my mid-winter visit, unhurried with newspapers on the rack for those wishing to just pass the time with their coffee or chocolate.
Favorite Dish: The "$4.75 Dejeuner Special" was what caught my eye in-passing whilst searching the area for a light breakfast and well worth it it was - the flakiest ever croissant, a chocolatine, equally flaky and crammed with chocolate, washed down with a decent cup of coffee. Adding the charming service from a rather attractive server (who may have been part of the ownership/managment) made the $4.75 an absolute bargain.
