Hutongs (Siheyuan in Chinese) are typical narrow ancient city alleys with traditional compounds and courtyard houses. They were originated under the Yuan Dynasty (1271 - 1368). There are approximately 4,500 hutongs in Beijing City and most of them are located around the Forbidden City. Most of these Hutongs have been designated as protected areas to boost the tourist industry as well as to preserve the rich history and culture of China. Most of the Hutongs today are relics of the Ming (1368 - 1644) and the Qing (1644 - 1911) Dynasties.

Hutongs are excellent tourist attractions. Many foreign tourists especially from the West love to visit at least one Hutong in Beijing. In our opinion Hutong tour in a rickshaw is a must for every foreign tourist visiting Beijing. Flip through our photos above to see the various attractions in a rickshaw!
