Favorite thing: You absolutely WILL feel history like you've never imagined. Being of 'the New World' we simply don't have cities built upon cities that are thousands (not hundreds) of years old. There are many sights where the natural beauty will sweep you away. There are others where taking a guided tour multiplies your appreciation for what you are seeing by far more than the small monetary investment you make in that simple service. A tour of the forum in Rome is free -- in hopes you'll sign up for a later excursion elsewhere. Standing on the same paving stones where Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony walked, well, it sends a charge through your mind and body. We saved Rome for last on our trip, and it was a tremendously grand finale. There had been a national election during our visit, and we saw celebrations and opposing demonstrations. Simply the next step following thousands of years of politics and religion that we saw reflected in the art, architecture, and lifestyle all across the country. (Picture here is from Castelvecchio in Verona -- amazing museum in the castle on the river)
