  Damad Ali-Pasha Turbe
by mikey_e

The Damad Ali-Pasha Turbe is one of the only examples of Islamic architecture to be found in all of Belgrade, and is conveniently located on the Gornji Grad plateau in Kalemegdan. It is a small, octagonal building with red-shingled roof. It was constructed in the 1780s on the orders of Damad Ali-Pasha, or Sultan Ahmet III, for the Belgrade Muhafiz Izmet Mehmed Pasha. It was damaged in the first Serbian uprising but repaired during the 1810s, after which time two later Muhafizin were buried in it. It is an interesting part of the whole Kalemedgan complex, which seems to be lacking in Turkish or Islamic architecture, given that it was used by the Ottomans for a good 3 centuries or so.
