Situated on the ancient and medieval trade road "via regia", Goerlitz flourished during the Middle Ages. Its wealthy merchants built magnificent houses and decorated their facades with stone carvings which were a proof of their prosperity.
On that summer day of August 2008 I felt as if we travelled back in time. The Old Town teemed with life. The sound of old music played by street musicians, the voices of stall keepers praising their goods, the old and young dressed in outfits from the epoch made us forget for a while about the present time. Then just a few steps further and we were some centuries later. We saw the vintage cars and their proud owners demonstrating their automobiles. These were my first impressions of Goerlitz.
