"Mammoth Legislature" Parliament - Orszaghaz Tip by mikey_e
Parliament - Orszaghaz, Budapest: 160 reviews and 330 photos
Parliament (Országház ? National House) has mythical proportions in Hungarian history ? which makes it a bit difficult for someone from a country like Canada to understand (the institution, maybe, but not the building). It seems a bit odd, too, that it would be the second-largest Parliament building in Europe, despite the fact that Hungary?s population is certainly not the second largest in Europe. It was started in 1885 and only completed in 1904 and its construction required the use of 40 kilo of gold and half a million precious stones. That fact alone puts the Gothic revivalist architecture to shame! The façade is decorated with various portraits of important Hungarian and Transylvanian statesmen, leaders and notables. The sheer size of the building is absolutely awe-inspiring, and, unfortunately, it makes it extremely difficult to get good shots of the building for posterity. All you can hope for is that your piecemeal collection of snapshots of the steeples and arches comes out well enough that you can piece them together into something larger. It is possible to go for a tour of the building, but its popularity with tour groups means that you should either look to arrange tickets in advance or that you should get there early, in the hopes of being at the front of the line.
