Matmata is the home of troglodytes, who built their houses vertically into the ground. The landscape is incredible: it looks like a big gruyere cheese! (picture 1). Too much touristy for me but it is worth a short stop if you are around there. Matmata is famous for being one of the settings of George Lucas? Star Wars and the berbers still live from that event: they have converted any construction facing the main road into a tourist attraction, sometimes complementing it with a berber desert tent where you can take a cup of tea, a camel and other freaky accessories. Thanks god I did not find Dark Vader!, eheh. I have to say that Matmata?s jedi knights are nicer than Maktar?s jedi knights (I'm still traumatized about Maktar. . .) and apart from a pheasant who followed us everywhere with his motorcycle, people was very kind. The main spot is, of course, the Hotel Sidi Driss, (picture 2) that was the scene of the disco in Star Wars I, The Attack of the Clones. Don?t worry, the hotel?s caretaker will explain eeeeeverything about ?the event?: 20 days of preparation and 1day for the shot. . . and George Lucas slept in the room number 8!! It?s a good occasion to take a good freaky picture as well (I did it!). A tip is expected, or if you don't like to give tips you can take a local coffee, which is perfect to go immediately to the toilet. . . Star Wars? effect?!
