There are several domes that mark the skyline of Lisbon. Estrela is one of them.
I already spoke a lot about D. Maria I in my post about Palácio of Queluz. She was extremely religious and she grabbed religion with everything she could to survive all the cathastrophies that surrounded her life and the pression of being the first portuguese queen. This church and the convent was built to celebrate the prgnancy of the queen and the born of a male son. The son unfortunately died before the curch was finished. It was designed by the same school of architects that built the Mafra Royal Palace, so there are some similarities in the barroque/neoclassical style.
D. Maria I died in Brazil but her body was brought to this church years later.
There is an amazing nativity scene inside with more than 500 figures but it is closed to the public for what I know.
In front you have the nice and shady Estrela Garden.

The nativity scene (crib) by Machado de Castro is open; or at least it was open some years ago.
