Officially called Catedral de São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, the city's modern cathedral is one of the most imposing structures in Centro. The enormous cathedral, commonly referred to as Catedral Metropolitana, can host up to 20,000 worshippers and its modern design is a contrast to the traditional Baroque style of Brazil's churches. Construction of this concrete "conical pyramid" began in 1964 in a structure resembling a round Mayan temple. Although quite unattractive on the outside, the interior of the Cathedral is astonishing. The lofty ceiling and the four incredible floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows create a unique serene atmosphere.

Address: Avenida República do Chile 245, CENTRO
