Very low quality european back packer food is passed off as "French" food. All the "french" restaurants are really Indian restaurants and the food is much more western fast food influenced by India. This includes: La Therasse, Madame Shanthi, Satsanga, Le Club. I really dont think you can get authentic french food in the tourist parts of Pondichery.
