Musée de la Marine ? France?s Maritime Museum, Paris: 15 reviews and 43 photos
This museum is a must for anybody who feels some interest for maritime history. I have been here five times and would say it is the best maritime museum in the UE.
Very interesting are the rooms showing the evolution from sail to steam power and from wood to metal.
The museum has the original model (1859) at scale 1/33 of the first armoured battleship called "La Gloire" (photo 1). The project of this world first armoured frigate was made by naval engineer Dupuy de Lôme. The nautical and military qualities of this armoured frigate (powered by sails and steam) launched in 1860 were so good that 10 frigates like this one were build and gave a significant maritime advantage to France.
The frigate "La Gloire" had a length of 78 m (the model is 271 cm long), the armour was 12 cm thick, there were 34 guns.
The life on board of the 570 men was very difficult. To avoid boring the armour, side openings were banished. The crew thus lived permanently with the gleam of the oil lamps and no ventilation.
Some years later (1868) the same engineer Dupuy de Lomé had a more powerful battleship launched called "L'Océan" (photo 2) with 4 turrets for heavy guns prefiguring the 20th c. battleships. Strange is the big ram at the bow; here we are back to the "rostrum" ram of the ancient Greek galleys.
