Sultanahmet Koftecisi: "Meatballmania" Sultanahmet Koftecisi Selim Usta Tip by ozalp

Meatballs have an important place in Turkish cuisine. There are many variations of them and generally they are named after the places they were made. There are several exceptions but many meatball names are also a location.
Sultanahmet meatball is a famous example of whole meatball madness. You can see hundreds of restaurants named ?Sultanahmet Koftecisi?, ?Meshur Sultanahmet Koftecisi? all around, but actually there is only one genuine restaurant and others are just using its fame.
Its location is unbeatable, on Divanyolu, near Sultanahmet square. Even here, a few meters above, there is a replica restaurant. You can find out which one is the real by looking the tables. The real one is always more crowded. Last time, I even waited a queue.
The menu is limited here. You can have only meatballs, salad, piyaz (bean salad) and irmik halva. The restaurant has two flats. Interior is extremely old and poor looking. May be it is the same decoration since the opening in 1921. Despite its appearance and below average service quality, it attracts many people. It is because of the fame and the taste. A small tip: Ask for the hot sauce. It has a great taste. You can dip your meatballs into it.
You can add this restaurant to your itinerary for a lunch break after visiting Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern or Archeological Museum.
