This is not Louvre or Prado, but it is still very special. Hawaii State Art Museum has a nice collection of photographs, paintings, and sculptures created on Hawaiian Islands only.
It is located on the second floor of the Capitol District Building which previously served as a Royal Hawaiian Hotel built by King Kamehameha V. The building itself is preserved as part of Honolulu?s history and in its shape reminds a cloister. From the lobby of the second floor you can exit to the big balcony where you can see the tiles of the original building.
It is divided into permanent display hall and a section where temporary exhibitions take place. Very interesting and rather different from any other museum works.
I especially liked the Liliuokalani bronze bust sculpture, very detailed, very real. Later I leaned that the sculptor, Marianna Pineda, created many similar and very detailed sculptures before her final version was chosen to be put in front of the State Capitol Building and just across the street from the museum.
The entrance to the museum is free and it is open Thursday to Saturday 10 am to 4 pm.
