Everyone knows famous Rothenburg ob der Tauber for its old town and the surrounding town wall.
But? Palatinate has many of villages like Rothenburg, often even better preserved and maybe even more authentic, because the villages are not only tourism-oriented. One example is Freinsheim, which is located in the northern parts of Palatinate?s lowlands and is surrounded by not only the town wall but also by vineyards as far as the eye can reach. With 4500 inhabitants, Freinsheim is rather small, so strolling around the village and walking around the town wall takes only 1-2 hours, if? yes if there wouldn?t be the countless wine pubs to sample some of the delicious regional wines here or there. Or yet another tiny street to discover left or right from the main streets. Or the smallest café of the world next to the maybe smallest theatre of Germany (photo 4). Or another magnificent little park. Or the old carriage house (Remise). Or the public library. Or the old measuring centre of 18th century. Or the next one of the five wall towers and two town gates. Or? or? or?

My photos reflect Freinsheim?s atmosphere on a sunny day end of 2008 (Dec. 30). It looks empty, yes, but simply because of that end of year day. From spring on it is full with locals and visitors, the shops and wine bars are open and everything is in full bloom.
Come for a visit and you will soon ask yourself why go to Rothenburg, if there is Freinsheim :-)

Thank you, dear SWR (TV station) for your inspiration and your program about Freinsheim and the smallest theatre in the world!

Freinsheim is located 3 km east of Herxheim at Deutsche Weinstraße, northeast of Bad Dürkheim. It has a train station, so it is also easily reached by train.

It is very cute, and it has many festivals, also a red wine fest :-))
